In the age of social media, the short-form video sharing app TikTok has emerged as an unexpected platform for sharing personal experiences and raising awareness about organ donation and transplantation. It highlights reality and its impact on individuals.

research method

The study included an analysis of the most popular English-language videos on TikTok using the hashtags #organdonor and #organdonation. The dataset included 313 videos that received approximately 80 million views and his 10 million likes. The video featured both donors and recipients, sharing their experiences not only celebrating the success of the transplant, but also celebrating and mourning the donor’s life lost. This study aimed to inform public assistance efforts and policies related to protecting anonymity and celebrating donors on the Honor Walk.

Main findings

This study found that a significant number of videos highlighted both the donor (56.2%) and the donor (44.1%). Although many videos celebrated and mourned the donor’s life lost (41.8%), there were also videos celebrating successful transplants (31.3%). Common video features include details about medical procedures (45.4%), honor walk introductions (10.9%), and showing donors and recipients who are connected or wish to connect (16.9%) will appear. Most videos showed a positive (74.1%) versus negative (10.2%) trend.

The significance of the Honor Walk

One of the most unique aspects of this study was its emphasis on the importance of “honor walks.” The Honor Walk is a tradition in which hospital staff line the hallways to pay their respects to deceased donors as they are taken to the operating room. The study found that his 10.9% of videos analyzed showed honor walks, highlighting the value of videos that honor donors’ selfless acts of giving life.

The impact of video on public perception

The TikTok videos were mostly positive in tone and depicted highly emotional and descriptive experiences. This portrayal can play an important role in shaping public perceptions of organ donation. By showing the human side of organ donation, these videos may promote more positive attitudes toward organ donation and encourage more individuals to become donors.

Public support and policy implications

Insights gained from this study can provide important information for public outreach efforts and policies related to organ donation. Understanding how organ donation is portrayed on social media platforms like TikTok can help healthcare organizations and policy makers align with the emotional realities and human experiences portrayed in these videos. You will be able to better adjust your strategy. This can include providing support to donor families, celebrating donors through honor walks, and fostering connections between donors and recipients.

As social media continues to influence our understanding and perception of world events, this study shows how TikTok can raise awareness and shape attitudes towards organ donation, a critical need in today’s healthcare landscape. This highlights the potential of such a platform.
