Woods Cross — The Woods Cross Youth City Council is rallying together to support a city council member who is recovering from a heart transplant.
The city council will be holding a blood drive on Friday, June 14, in memory of 16-year-old Carter Gurley.
The blood drive will be held at the Woods Cross Public Works Department, 2287 South 1200 West, from 12-6 p.m.
Gourley, a senior at Bountiful High School, was born with a congenital heart defect and has undergone multiple surgeries, including open-heart surgery, which often requires blood transfusions during surgery.
“We'd like to say a huge thank you to all of our blood donors. Your donations were essential to Carter's surgery and recovery,” said Gurley's mother, Amy Gurley. “Although he doesn't like a lot of attention, Carter is excited about the blood drive. He's very grateful and eager to give back to the community.”
The American Red Cross has reported a 20,000-donation shortage nationwide in the past few weeks to keep blood supplies flowing. Blood transfusions are needed for a variety of procedures and conditions, including cancer, kidney disease and sickle cell disease. Blood transfusions also save the lives of crash and accident victims and patients undergoing major surgery.
Carter can schedule blood drives using the Red Cross Blood App. redcrossblood.org, Or call us at 1-800-733-2767.
Anyone who donates between June 10 and 30 will receive a $15 e-gift card to be used at the store of their choice.
