A woman volunteered to donate her kidney to her friend's husband.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 is celebrating its 75th anniversary. So, to commemorate this occasion, we are opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

On December 21, 2020, we shared an update on a life-saving story.

The initiative began in 2013 when Patrice Brown and Carla Ballesteros were principal and assistant principal at Western Guilford Middle School. they became friends.

Seven years later, Patrice said her relationship with her husband's kidney donor didn't work out. So Kara volunteered.

On December 15, 2020, Carla and John announced that they would be undergoing surgery.

We followed up with them on the 21st of that year and everything went well. We checked in again and got together this week to celebrate our 4th anniversary since our transplant.

Carla runs half marathons in Spain and encourages people to become living donors.

She says she didn't lose her kidney. She now has a brother.
