Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar shared some positive medical news on the evening of Nov. 16.

Kosar took to social media platform X to share that he was scheduled for an early-morning liver transplant on Nov. 17.

“Good news is in!!! We are set for 5 AM,” he wrote. “Thank you all for the thoughts, prayers, and support — it truly means the world to me. U Matter.”

Cleveland Magazine reported last year that Kosar, 61, was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver – one of the later stages of liver failure – and Parkinson’s disease. He has had his name on the liver transplant list since late last spring.

The news of a new scheduled transplant came four days after Kosar told his social media followers that his previous chance at a transplant procedure was delayed after doctors found the donor organ to be infected.

Throughout the week leading up to his Nov. 17 scheduled transplant, Kosar made several social media posts announcing that he had undergone multiple procedures to deal with internal bleeding.

The Browns icon led Cleveland to three AFC championship game appearances over his nine years with the team – from 1985 to 1993. Kosar still has the third-most wins (53) and has the third-most passing yards (21,904) of any quarterback in Browns franchise history.

Bernie Kosar announces successful liver transplant surgery

Kosar provided another positive update via social media a few hours after he went under the knife for his Nov. 17 liver transplant.

“I’m out and I’m feeling good,” Kosar said in a video he posted to X. “Ready to enjoy the rest of the week and the rest of our lives.”

Kosar had been on the liver transplant list since late spring last year after getting a diagnosis of cirrhosis of the liver – advanced scarring to the organ tissue, according to Mayo Clinic – and Parkinson’s disease in 2023. He was scheduled to receive a liver transplant last week, but his procedure was delayed after doctors discovered the donor organ was diseased.

In the week prior to the transplant procedure, Kosar had undergone seven surgeries to try to stop internal bleeding, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

The former Browns’ quarterback announced the evening of Nov. 16 that he’d been scheduled for a liver transplant early in the morning on Nov. 17.

Why does Bernie Kosar need a liver transplant?

Kosar was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver in 2023, the former Browns quarterback told Cleveland Magazine last year.

Cirrhosis of the liver is “a late stage of chronic liver disease,” when “a significant amount of your healthy liver tissue has turned to scar tissue,” according to Cleveland Clinic. It is a precursor to full liver failure.

In his interview with Cleveland Magazine, Kosar said that he had been dealing with health issues related to his liver for years but always brushed them off. His diagnosis came in 2023 and eventually worsened to the point that doctors told him he would likely need a new liver.

Kosar was added to the liver transplant list in the late spring of 2024 and received his transplant on Nov. 17, 2025.
