Dallas, Texas, May 2, 2025 (Globe Newswire) – In historic medical results, the National Institute of Pediatrics (INP) has successfully performed two pediatric industrial liver transplants in a week, giving two children a life-renewed opportunity. This groundbreaking milestone sets new precedents for pediatric transplantation in Mexico and highlights the transformational power of collaboration and innovation in healthcare.

Lifeline for children with urgent need
Every year, hundreds of Mexico's children face life-threatening conditions while awaiting a liver transplant. However, the need for live donor transplants has been more critical than ever, as there are only 4.5 deceased organ donors per million inhabitants. A pediatric liver transplant program for living donors not only reduces waiting times, but also significantly improves survival rates and ensures that children receive timely, life-saving treatment.

This initiative provides hope for biliary atresia (compared to 43% of cases), the leading cause of pediatric liver transplantation, as well as liver tumors, metabolic disorders, and fetal hepatitis. Research shows that children who have received a live donor transplant are 42% less likely to die within a year compared to children who rely on deceased donor organs. These implants also reduce the risk of graft loss by 44%, making them an important solution for pediatric patients.

Changes in driving for visionary leadership
This groundbreaking success is the result of INP's unwavering commitment to pediatric care. Under the guidance of General Director Dr. Mercedes Macias Para and INP Medical Director Dr. Amalia Guadalupe Bravo Lindro, it has established itself as a leading Latin American institution for pediatric liver transplantation.

The extraordinary medical teams behind these historical transplants include Dr. Antonio Medina, chief of INP transplantation and liver papilla surgery, and DRS. Esperanza Vidales and Manuel Rodríguez-Dávalos. Their expertise and dedication played a key role in ensuring the success of these life-saving surgeries.

Special acknowledgements will be given to Dr. Manuel Rodríguez-Dávalos, a surgical team leader and officer of the Fight for Life Club Foundation. His visionary approach and commitment to pediatric liver transplants have been instrumental in moving forward with this initiative.

Unsung Heroes: Liver Donor
Medical professionals coordinate these complicated surgeries, but the true heroes are selfless living liver donors who have stepped forward to give some of themselves the opportunity to save a child's life. Their courage and generosity not only gave these children a second chance, but also set a moving example of human kindness and sacrifice.

Postoperative care for these young patients was equally important to their recovery. Special awareness extends to the doctor. Daniel Hernández and Jorge Enrique Maza and Dr. Martha Patricia Márquez, head of the ICU unit at INP, and her team, are for their unwavering commitment to patient care. The anesthesia team led by Dr. Ulises Soto and Dr. Silvia Peña also played a key role in ensuring the safety of both donors and recipients throughout the surgical process.

Mexican pediatric healthcare
This initiative has put Mexico on a major step in pediatric care. By defending Living Donor's transplant, INP and the Fight for Life Club Foundation are actively reducing life-saving treatment barriers and improving outcomes for children in need. This collaboration not only saves lives, but also sets new standards for pediatric transplants across Latin America.
