High school organ donation poster contest winners were honored

Four Freeport High School students selected in statewide competitions

Augusta, Maine – Secretary of State Shena Bellows, state legislator Melanie Sachs and representatives from New England Donor Services (NEDS) were selected as recipients of the year today in honor of four students at Freeport High School. The annual statewide competition challenges high school students to create posters that educate the public about organ donation. Art from the top three winners will be displayed in the state and in New England. The competition is a way for students to show off their creative talent and spread awareness about the importance of organ donation.

The winners are:

  • 1st place – Freeport High School (10)th Grade)
  • 2nd place – Jacoby Brehm, Freeport High School (10)th Grade)
  • 3rd place – Iangsman from Freeport High School (10)th Grade)
  • Honorable mentions – Makenzie Mills, Freeport High School (9)th Grade)

“This year, NEDS has achieved a record number of life-saving donor organ donations and transplants in four New England service areas.th In a row, since 2020, we have been able to increase the annual number of organ donors by 80%.” Matthew Borger, Director of Government Relations for Donor Services in New England. “But the needs are amazing and every day someone is waiting for a life-saving donation. This annual contest is a fun way to bring attention to very serious issues and we cannot fully appreciate these students' beautiful and impactful designs.”

In 2024, NEDS coordinated organ donation from 648 individuals, resulting in 1,570 life-saving transplants. Record levels of clinical activity place NED among the nation's top three organ procurement organizations (OPOs) by donor volume nationwide.

“Around 54% of Maine who received a new license or state ID in a given month chose to become organ donors,” he said. Secretary of State Shena Bellows. “For the past month, we've seen a record number of people include their minds in their identification. Already this year, more than 72,000 Maine has registered as potential life-saving donors.”
