Legal hurdles remain a reason why regular mechanisms for organ donation between Hong Kong and mainland China have yet to come into effect since the launch in 2022, according to the country's top health experts.
Wang Haibo, director of China Organ Transplant Response System (COTRS), said it would take time to amend mainland laws to promote the establishment of mechanisms on Tuesday as a sideliner sideline to the Hospital Authority Treaty.
“There are legal hurdles to do that,” Wang said. “We have HIV regulations that are prohibited. [the transfer of] Organs that cross borders.
“Organs, blood, tissues…can't do it [be transferred] Crossing the border. ”
COTRS is a national system that assigns organs to transplants nationwide.
Wang said certain laws that hindered the development of cross-border mechanisms were related to controls to prevent the spread of HIV.
