Texas Children's is dedicated to helping bone marrow transplant recipients live their fullest lives after treatment.
We host three social events each year for BMT/SCT patients and their families that provide a fun way to relieve the stress of treatment and hospitalization.
emotional and social challenges
Following a bone marrow transplant can be a difficult and stressful time. It takes time for the immune system to recover from a transplant, and preventing infections is a commitment that involves the whole family. Homeschooling, avoiding crowds and public places, and limiting the number of visitors to your home can put a strain on the entire family. During this period, which can last up to one to two years, you may begin to feel isolated from your friends and classmates. Life may seem to be happening around you, but it is not happening to you.
Hosting social gatherings for bone marrow transplant patients gives patients a chance to make new friends, feel “normal” and spend time away from worrying about medical matters, even if it's just for one night. I'll give it to you. These events are generously funded by His Grace Foundation, The Falk Foundation, Riley's Cause, and Stuff the Sleigh.
BMT family event. Families of BMT patients are invited to participate in this annual event.
BMT lock-in. Teens ages 13 to 18 are welcome to join us for a fun and games night held each May. Activities include a gaming truck, team building activities, a mad science visit, a hospital “selfie scavenger hunt,” and several other group games.
Current and former patients are encouraged to call the BMT Clinic at 832-826-0870. To sign up or to learn more about her upcoming BMT events, talk to your BMT Clinic Nursing Coordinator.
