After losing their daughter, the Swope family of Aurora, Colorado, is dedicated to honoring her memory by helping patients like her.

Lauren, the daughter of Rhonda and Rondell Swope, was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus when she was 11 years old. As the disease progressed, her kidneys were damaged, but her spirit remained undiminished.

“She was outgoing. She was a rebel and didn't always follow the rules. She was a loving girl and just a fun person,” Rhonda said.

Her parents said Lauren's loving spirit inspired them to care for other dialysis patients, no matter how much pain they were in.

“She brought all the blankets. Every time she brought a blanket, we asked, 'Why are you bringing so many blankets?'” Dr. Rondell said. '', explaining that the process of purifying the blood leaves the patient cold. “And she was seeing people out there freezing and seeing if they had any extra blankets to give to anyone.”
