While much has been written about advances in the field of pediatric transplantation, there are relatively few publications that address the social, psychological and daily struggles faced by pediatric transplant recipients and their families. In February 2021, a special issue of the Journal Pediatric Transplantation, compiled by a children's hospital nephrologist and medical director of Transplantation Asha Moudgil, guests compiled articles from a diverse group of experts who share their expertise on topics related to healthy living for pediatric organ transplant patients. Among these leaders in their field are Jonathan Albert, Maryland (Infectious Disease Fellow), Benjamin Honish, Maryland (Transplant Infectious Diseases), Kristen Sagambatt, PhD, Lord, Lord (Kidney Nutritionist), Messa R. Meires, MD (Neclalogia), Mosal of Care Amatra and Care Amatta (Psychologist).
Dr. Muzil, editor who co-authored with Priya Verghese, MD, of Anne & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, wrote: A diverse group of experts including doctors, psychologists, social workers and nutritionists.
Dr. Albert, Dr. Hanish, and Dr. Sugambat provide their expertise in the article “A safe lifestyle and an approach to diet after solid organ transplantation.” This reviews the risks that children and adolescent solid organ transplant recipients encounter through exposure such as home contact, outdoor activities, travel, travel, animal exposure, and dietary choices.
Like their peers, transplant recipients experience sexual developmental challenges, but chronic immunosuppression increases the risk of sexually transmitted diseases. To address this need, Dr. Myers and colleagues provide sexual preventive care resources for adolescent and young adult solid organ transplant recipients in the article “Promoting safe sexual practices and maintenance of sexual health in children and young adults” article.
Additionally, in an article entitled “Psychological Function and Psychosocial Issues in Pediatric Kidney Transplant Recipients,” Dr. Amatea and colleagues analyse the psychological and psychosocial factors associated with medical outcomes and overall wells after transplantation.
