MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) – For Vince and Shaylee Cano, their wedding vows took on deeper meaning just months after saying “I do.”
The Midland couple, who married in April, received life-changing news three months later when Vince was diagnosed with stage three kidney failure. Now, Shaylee is preparing to donate her kidney to her husband in a transplant surgery scheduled for Monday.
“I love this man you know I want him here with me for a very long time,” Shaylee said.
Both Vince and Shaylee grew up in Midland and attended Midland High School, but never crossed paths until they met as adults.
Living with kidney failure
The diagnosis dramatically changed Vince’s daily routine and quality of life.
“Whenever I was going to my clinic actually I was one of the youngest there and that broke my heart. I mean it just it just changes your life you know my whole lifestyle changed, and she was there to adapt in every single way that she could,” Vince said.
Currently, Vince connects to a dialysis machine every night.
“I hook up to a machine every night for 8 hours and that’s just kinda my life you know,” he said.
A perfect match
Just three months after Vince’s diagnosis, Shaylee was declared a compatible kidney donor.
“I wanted to tell everybody, just scream it from the mountain tops, ‘Hey guys! I get to give my husband my kidney! We’re good!’” Shaylee said.
Without Shaylee as a donor, Vince would have faced up to five years on the transplant waiting list.
“For me it was like relief, like the dark valley we’ve been walking in there’s finally light,” Shaylee said.
Preparing for surgery
The couple faces a busy few days before Monday’s transplant. They recently purchased a house and are moving while preparing for the surgery and recovery period.
“So we gotta unpack the house and have it ready to go and prepare it for us to be on dialysis for 2 weeks,” Shaylee said.
Despite the overwhelming circumstances of moving, surgery and recovery, Vince said he feels supported by his community.
“I have people fighting for me. I have people watching over me I have my wife fighting for me and I cant give up you know. I cant give up. These people made me stronger. I’m here for a reason that’s my testimony and it’s just a challenge,” he said.
