An Indian-born Canadian man has become the world’s oldest kidney transplant patient.

Walter Tauro was 87 years and 262 days old when he underwent surgery in June 2023.

Nine months later, Walter’s new kidney is working well.

Doctors initially advised Walter not to undergo a transplant due to the risk of death, but the procedure was approved by cardiologists and hematologists.

Walter underwent surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.

Although the surgery was approved, there was no guarantee that Walter would survive.

“We said goodbye to each other thinking it was the last time,” Walter’s son Lionel recalled.

“My father was determined to have this surgery, even though he knew it could end his life.”

Walter decided to undergo a transplant because he no longer wanted to undergo daily dialysis.

Kidney dialysis is a process that removes excess fluid and toxins from the blood of people whose kidneys are no longer able to perform these functions naturally.

“When I received Mr. Tauro’s referral, I checked his date of birth twice to make sure it was correct,” Jennifer, a registered nurse, wrote in the hospital’s biannual publication.・Jayoma Austria recalled. transplant digest.

“Making him a candidate for a kidney transplant proves that it’s not age that matters; it’s the individual’s overall health that determines suitability.”

The kidney Walter received came from an anonymous deceased donor.

Speaking about his experience on the day of the surgery, Walter admitted that he was scared. “I closed my eyes and prayed, and the next thing I knew, I was waking up in the recovery room and being told that my kidney transplant was a success. I was so happy.”

Although the surgery was successful, Walter faced a long recovery process. After that, he was hospitalized for more than a month. His average length of stay in the hospital is 6-10 days.

Walter was then discharged for further rehabilitation at home, but was readmitted briefly after experiencing minor complications.

Walter says the new kidney is a “priceless gift” that has given him a second chance at life.

Not only does she no longer have to undergo daily dialysis, she is also able to drive and play with her two grandchildren.

Walter is currently back in the hospital after suffering a mild heart attack and is expected to make a full recovery within two weeks.

I am very proud to be the oldest person to receive a kidney transplant. Sometimes I thought, yes, maybe I’m too old…Then I thought about my life – there’s so much I still want to experience.
