ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – March is National Kidney Month.by National Society of Nephrology, 850 million people worldwide have kidney disease. That includes people in our area.
Rochester mother Jennifer Servais was 16 years old when she was diagnosed with a completely atrophied, non-functioning left kidney and a partially atrophied right kidney. She deals with chronic pain, fatigue, and her brain fog.
She had stage 3 chronic kidney disease for many years. Over the past two years, her remaining kidney function has spiraled downward from stage 4 to stage 5, the end stage of kidney disease.
Her doctors recommend a pre-emptive transplant, ideally to avoid dialysis.
Jennifer supports organ donation, if not for herself, then for others.
“I feel like people are called to do this altruistically, not just for me. I mean, there’s no greater gift than giving the gift of life to each other, to someone, even someone you don’t know, and it’s not just that person. , it could be good for a lot of people too,” she said.
Jennifer says her family supports her by sending her two children to school and university, and looking after her elderly parents and the family farm.
