Dr. Ronald Busuttil Professor Emeritus of Surgery David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA; He has been selected as the 2024 Medawar Award recipient by the Transplant Society.
He was recognized for his contributions to advancing knowledge on liver transplantation, preservation, and management of organ donors. Medawar Award, The award, which has been presented every two years since 1990, also recognizes Busuttil's efforts to expand the organ donation pool and improve patient outcomes.
Trained in liver transplantation under Dr. Thomas Starzl in Pittsburgh, Busuttil performed the first successful liver transplant west of the Mississippi and founded the UCLA Liver Transplant Program in 1984. He is co-editor of Liver Transplantation, now in its fourth edition.
In addition to the Medawar Award, Dr. Busuttil has received numerous honors, including the American Society of Transplant Surgeons Pioneer Award, the American College of Surgeons Scientific Achievement Award, and the Thomas E. Starzl Award in Surgery and Immunology. He is an honorary member of the French Academie National de Surgeonate and has received honorary degrees in medicine and surgery from the University of Udine in Italy.
