FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – February 14th isn’t just Valentine’s Day, it’s National Organ Donor Day.
There are currently more than 100,000 people on the transplant waiting list in the United States, and more than 1,000 of those patients are Hoosiers.
According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, 17 people die every day while waiting for an organ transplant.
Steven Johnson worked in critical care as a pilot and EMT and saw firsthand how organ donation can save lives.
He currently serves as Chief Operating Officer for the Indiana Donor Network. This network serves as a vital link between donors and patients awaiting life-saving organ transplants.
“Donations are just one of the things we can get, and we can see people’s lives being saved. And we can actually do something, and so many people donate their organs. I can’t believe that you have given me such a selfless gift to become a person.”
The Indiana Donor Network also works closely with donor families to support them in their time of need. If you would like to become a donor, you can easily register at BMV or at: donatelifeindiana.org
