MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Alabama has the highest number of dialysis patients waiting for organ donation per capita in the nation.
“Getting dialysis is very expensive. It’s a very arduous journey, three times a week, each treatment takes three hours, so once you find out you need dialysis, you can’t continue working. Some people run out,” said Shannon Morrell, Alabama Kidney Regional Director. Foundation.
To help address all the challenges associated with dialysis treatment, the Kidney Foundation of Alabama will once again host its annual Kidney Walk & Celebration.
“Every year we have a kickoff, and that kickoff is just for everyone to get together and get excited, motivated, and learn all about the future steps and celebrations of the foundation,” Morrell said.
The foundation aims to get more people to register as organ donors, raise funds to help pay for treatment for patients on fixed incomes, and raise awareness about how kidney disease treatment happens. We host these events in six different locations across the state with three major goals in mind: .
Celebration Patient President Dennis Mitchell understands the dialysis process.
She had to undergo treatment several years ago.
“I went back and forth to the doctor and changed my diet to help my kidneys,” Mitchell said.
In 2021, she got her organs.
Now she’s helping others in their fight.
“One of my dialysis nurses always told me, ‘Just trust the process,’ so if you don’t trust the process, you’ll get through it,” Mitchell said. .
