SPD officer recovering after successful kidney transplant

HOUSTON, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) — Shreveport Police Officer Samantha Gwinn's kidney transplant surgery was successful.

According to Shreveport Police, Officer Gwynn is recovering after undergoing surgery Friday at Houston Methodist Transplant Hospital, where her body accepted a transplanted kidney from her cousin, Destiny.

Officer Gwinn will begin weekly checkups while remaining in Houston following his surgery. Officer Gwinn says he will need to remain in Houston for the next 3-4 months following his surgery.

Gwynn said he plans to return to police service once he is healthy.
