Trinity Health Grand Rapids celebrates major milestone

The hospital is home to West Michigan’s only adult kidney transplant center.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Trinity Health Grand Rapids We recently celebrated our 3,000th kidney transplant.

On February 10, 2024, 40-year-old Grand Rapids resident Jennifer LaManzi received a kidney transplant. Her hospital’s public relations team says she is currently recovering and is doing well.

The 3,000-person milestone is a big deal for the hospital.Trinity Health Grand Rapids is the only Adult Kidney Transplant Center Located in western Michigan.

“Patients here in West Michigan have the ability to change 3,000 lives, save lives through kidney transplants, and have a second chance at life,” said Jill McNamara, Trinity Health Grand Rapids Transplant Services Director. Some people are getting it,” he said. .

The first kidney transplant at Trinity Health Grand Rapids was performed in 1973. Currently, 90 to 100 kidney transplants are typically performed annually.

“We’re excited,” McNamara said of the milestone. “It’s huge.”

The National Kidney Registry has the largest living donor pool, increasing the likelihood that patients will find a compatible donor. McNamara said about one-third of transplants performed in Grand Rapids are from living donors.

“While dialysis is effective for many patients, the long-term effects of dialysis can be quite taxing on the body,” McNamara says. “This is not a natural process, so patients who ultimately receive a kidney transplant tend to live longer and be in better health than those on long-term dialysis.”

More than 2,400 people in Michigan are waiting for an organ transplant, and 82% of them are waiting for a kidney, according to Trinity Health.
