On Sunday, the family of a 42-year-old man donated his organs including heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and bones to Apollo Hospital in Navi Mumbai. Among these organs, the liver was shared with KEM Hospital, contributing to the revival of the liver transplant program since 2018. Zone Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) said it was a good sign that the corpse’s liver was brought to a public hospital after so many years.
The person who benefited from this was an 11-year-old boy suffering from Wilson’s disease. Wilson’s disease is a rare genetic disease in which copper accumulates in various organs, especially the liver, causing liver damage. KEM dean Dr Sangeeta Rabhat said the transplant was carried out on Sunday and the patient is recovering. “We have been preparing to restart the liver transplant program for some time now,” she said, adding that the hospital has received 1.2 billion from a Walkeshwar-based businessman to build a six-bed state-of-the-art ICU. For the transplant patients, it added that it had received a donation of Rs 50 million. The hospital is also collecting donations for this patient. — Sumitra Debroy
