The Penn State Department of Health has voluntarily discontinued the liver transplant program at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center due to concerns about documentation and clinical processes, a spokesperson told Spotlight Penn State.

The program could remain inactive for up to a year as a national regulator plans to conduct a performance review. 63 patients are affected by the closure and will need to be transferred to other liver transplant centers.

Penn State's program was accredited in 2022 and recently returned to normalcy. Spokeswoman Barbara Shindo told Spotlight Pennsylvania that the health system had not received any notices of noncompliance prior to this review.
