Shasta County women urgently need liver transplants due to diet-related cirrhosis

Kylie Jewette, a 22-year-old woman from Shasta County, is in danger at the California Pacific Medical Center Vanness Campus in San Francisco, where she has a ventilator and is urgently waiting for a liver transplant. Her mother, Cheri Stephen, has been by her side in the hospital since Kylie collapsed at work on May 14th.

“I might have lost my daughter,” Steffen said. Reminiscing the horrifying moment when Kylie's mind stopped a few days ago, she had to make a comeback with CPR. “That was when I was… “I'm going to lose my baby girl,” she said.

Kylie's condition, which is liver cirrhosis, is due to a diet high in junk food, not alcohol or drug use. Her diagnosis highlights growing concerns about non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is often associated with diets high in processed foods, saturated fats and sugar. The National Institutes of Health notes that NAFLD is currently one of the leading causes of liver damage in young adults.

Steffen emphasized the importance of dietary awareness and urged parents and children to be aware of their food choices. “Look at what you eat,” she said. “It's processed food. You're not a superhero. You're invisible. 'It won't happen to me'…it can happen. ”

Kylie regained the ability to flash once for yes and twice for no. Once she is fully awakened and consistent, she is moved to the top of the transplant list.

Steffens is grateful to everyone who reached out to Kylie to support him during this time. She asked if the community would “keep them in prayer as they navigate the long road of recovery.”
