Phoenix (Az Family) -This Mother's Day is something special for one valley mom as she is given a second chance of life and time with her children after a double lung transplant.
In October 2023, Dianna Lomas had a newborn boy. But soon, she signed for Covid-19, and her health got worse.
“In the past, I had gotten Covid before, so I thought it would really get sick like normal, but it goes away. But it didn't go away,” Lomas said.
She was then diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease known as MDA5, which affects breathing, skin and joints. “I couldn't do much. I got to a place where I was very sick and I had to learn to do it all over again,” she said.
Dr. Bhuvin Buddhava transplant respiratory surgeon Dignity's healthsaid that Lomas' case was one of the most complicated cases he encountered. He and other doctors decided that a double lung transplant would be required to survive.
“There are not many cases like this. The majority of centers around the world do not consider transplantation in this case just because the disease itself is very aggressive. It is difficult to find a donor because of the antibody profile and the disease, as it may return after implantation,” Buddhaff said.
Last Mother's Day, I spent several months in the hospital and rarely saw her child. The doctor found a donor for Lomas.
A year later, she leaves the hospital and celebrates Mother's Day for the first time with her newborn baby. “I still have no words to tell anyone that I am sure I am grieving what is lost, but then to know that something good has been done.
