It all started with a minor cough when Shannon was in her final year of graduate school at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

“The cough turned out to be pneumonia and she was diagnosed with COP (organizing pneumonia of unknown etiology), which is interstitial lung disease,” said Daniel Lovell, who has known Shannon since they began dating as students at King Philip High School in 2013. The couple continued dating while attending the University of Massachusetts and married last December. By that time, Shannon's condition had deteriorated significantly.
