New York State has reached a major milestone in organ donation.
For the first time, more than 50% of eligible New Yorkers have registered as donors. Gov. Kathy Hochul's office said this is important because the state has historically had one of the lowest donor registration rates in the country.
“The decision to give the gift of life to someone else is a great example of the giving spirit of New Yorkers,” Hochul said in a statement.
But Aisha Tater, executive director of Donate Life New York, said the effort continues to ensure people get the life-saving transplants they need.
“They're our family and our friends,” Tater said Wednesday at a news conference in the Bronx. “They're moms and dads, dads who want to walk their daughters down the aisle, moms who want to leave their kids at night.” “They are our colleagues and colleagues,” he said. They depend on us. ”
Approximately 8,000 New Yorkers are currently on the organ donation waiting list, according to the governor's office.
“Through organ and tissue donation, one donor can save up to eight lives and heal an additional 75 lives,” the press release states.
There are multiple ways to register as an organ donor.
