PORTLAND (WGME) – This week is Organ Donation Week in Portland.

According to New England Donor Services, Maine has one of the highest organ donation rates on the East Coast.

On Wednesday morning, the group joined Portland Mayor Mark Dion and Secretary of State Shenna Bellows in urging even more people to register.

The BMV makes it easy.

According to New England Donor Services, just one donation could save up to six lives.

“Donating a life is about the idea of hope, the idea of living a legacy, the idea that your heart can mean something miraculous to someone else,” said Matt Boger, government relations director for New England Donor Services.

New England Donor Services announced that it had secured a record 64 organ donors in June, securing more than 150 organs for future transplants.
