The Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) Department of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation has announced the promotion of Harry Sun, MD, FACS, to Chief of Transplant Surgery. Dr. Sun joined the program in 2007 and has served as Associate Chief of Transplantation for the program since 2016. He also serves as an Associate Professor of Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
In addition to being an experienced kidney and pancreas transplant surgeon, Dr. Sun's clinical interests and expertise include laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, minimally invasive surgery, pediatric kidney transplantation, and vascular and peritoneal dialysis access. He also has an interest in clinical outcomes research and the education of medical students and residents with a special focus on surgical techniques and evidence-based medicine and practice.
Prior to joining CBMC, Dr. Sun completed a two-year multi-organ transplant fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed his internship and residency in general surgery at CBMC, where he served as chief resident during his final year. Dr. Sun earned his MD from SGU School of Medicine and his Bachelor's in Biology from Muhlenberg College. Dr. Sun is board certified in surgery and has presented his original research at several national conferences.
Dr. Sun, along with Stuart R. Geffner, MD, chairman and chief of surgery, transplant and general surgery associates Matthew Rosenzweig, MD and Matthew Hanlon, MD, and transplant surgeons James Guarella, MD and Grace Lee Riddle, MD, of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and University Hospital in Newark, NJ, form the largest and most experienced group of transplant surgeons in New Jersey. They specialize in kidney and pancreas transplants, dialysis access, and general and advanced laparoscopic surgery.
