Newswise — Washington, DC (March 18, 2024) —The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and Home Dialysis University (HDU) began a collaboration in 2023 to improve the knowledge, proficiency, and experience of home dialysis therapy for nephrology trainees. Through this collaboration, ASN will provide scholarships to 30 of his fellows to attend his face-to-face HDU fellow training courses and virtual longitudinal case bases taught by renowned experts in peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis. Participated in an educational series. After a successful first year, ASN and HDU will continue the scholarship program this year, giving 45 fellows the opportunity to participate in the program.

Home dialysis has been shown to be less costly than in-center dialysis and to produce comparable or better clinical outcomes. 2021 only 14.1% of Medicare Patients undergoing dialysis underwent dialysis at home. Despite the high incidence and prevalence, Rates of kidney disease among blacks and Hispanics are even lower when compared with non-Hispanic whites, and blacks and Hispanics with kidney disease are even less likely to be treated with home dialysis.

“The ASN HDU Scholarship Program, now in its second year, continues to affirm ASN’s commitment to improving access to home dialysis for all people with kidney disease. Education among Nephrology Fellows Improving dialysis and increasing exposure to home dialysis will pave the way for future nephrology talent to ensure universal access to home dialysis and improve care for people receiving dialysis. ” said Deidre C. Cruz, MD, ScM, FASN, ASN President. .

Nephrology fellows have long cited lack of education and exposure to home hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis during training as major educational gaps. The ASN Task Force on the Future of Nephrology aims to provide additional education to fill currently identified gaps in nephrology training and opportunities for fellows to explore advanced specialty care and other career goals in greater depth. We recommend establishing separate pathways to provide access to people and prioritizing diversity, equity, and social responsibility. We strive for inclusion as well as promoting equity in healthcare in all aspects of nephrology, especially fellowship training.

“I was nervous about managing home dialysis patients the same way I do in-patient dialysis,” said Fatima Ayub of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the Central Arkansas Veterans Health System, a 2023 scholarship program participant. said the medical doctor. “The HDU Scholarship Program has clarified many concepts for me and enabled me to manage patients with confidence. I now see these patients regularly in my home therapy clinic. , I am putting into practice all the knowledge I have gained from HDU faculty.”

In July 2021, ASN established a Home Dialysis Steering Committee to identify and prioritize gaps in training, education, and advocacy in home dialysis. Based on recommendations from the Steering Committee and in line with priorities identified by his ASN Task Force on the Future of Nephrology, ASN has entered into a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to pilot home dialysis. The course has been established. Nephrology Fellows provide training from respected leaders in home dialysis, followed by a long-term virtual education program. The Nephrology Fellow will apply for her ASN Travel Support Scholarship to attend her HDU course to be held in Chicago, IL from September 8th to 10th, 2024 and will be in the next Virtual Longitudinal Series.
